 A workbench is a sturdy table at which mostly manual work is done. It could be a simple, flat surface or have a complex design to suit a particular need and may be considered a tool in itself. There is no specific size for a workbench. It could be a small jeweler’s bench to a huge bench used by a staircase maker. The most common shape for a workbench is a rectangle, often using the surface, corners and edges as flat/square and dimension standards. There is a whole range of designs but the most common features shared by most workbenches are:

1. A comfortable height for working either seated or standing
2. A way to fix the piece that is being worked on to the surface so it can be worked on by both hands
3. Provisions for mounting, storing and accessing the tools.

Workbenches range in price from a few dollars to thousands of dollars. The workbench market can be divided into 3 basic groups:

Woodworking Workbenches – The standard size for these types of benches is 50-60 inches. Very often they have cabinets for tool and machinery storage.

General Garage Workbenches – These benches are not very expensive and are popular as auxiliary benches. They work great as extra storage space.

Portable Workbenches – These units are light weight and easy to transport from place to place. These were originally designed for people who love DIY and then got popular among the kitchen cabinet makers and woodworkers for their ability to give an extra hand in the workplace.
